When Paul started VKB Kitchen and Bath in 2012, it was just a business. He will tell you that himself. No grand mission. No calling. A trade he knew, and a bet that he could do it well.
Back then, here is what remodeling actually looked like for most people. A designer from one company, a builder from another and products from a third. And then the job nobody warned them about: the homeowner became the project manager. Unpaid and untrained. Making calls on lunch breaks, translating between people who had never met, hoping the budget survived. Even when every individual was good, the project was chaos, because nobody owned the whole thing.
Paul comes from a family of artists and musicians. Taste is in his blood, and so is the belief that beautiful ideas deserve to be finished well. His answer was simple to say and rare to find: put the designer, the builder, the products, and the project manager under one roof, so the homeowner never has to hold the project together on their own. One team, one plan, one standard.
He calls it “From Inspiration to Installation.”
At the time, that one-stop concept was foreign to Maryland, and to most of America. It turned VKB into one of the most sought after design and build firms in the state. Along the way, Paul learned something that now shapes everything we do. Remodeling is one of the few industries where a company’s internal systems show up directly in the customer’s experience. Then there is the machine behind them. Paul built a project management system so complete that it turns a project manager into a leader, because every decision has been thought through. Every tiny detail is factored in. We mean tiny details with OCD-level obsession. 😂 Every time someone visits Paul in his office, he proudly shows them his notebooks, with timestamps on them, where he explains how much effort he put in building every small detail in his system. Routes are planned so a project manager never drives two miles more than they need to. Materials are ordered, tracked, and delivered with assembly line discipline, so demolition does not begin until your cabinets, your tile, and your fixtures are already sitting on site. A crew that never waits on a delivery is a project that never stops.
And Paul checks. Obsessively. 😱 This is a man who will spot a cabinet handle sitting three millimeters off center from across the room. Who expects every site broom swept at the end of every single day (he is famously germaphobe), tools stacked in one corner, so a homeowner never comes home to chaos. Who has project managers walk the finished tile with a flashlight, because a flashlight catches what daylight forgives. We are not exaggerating. Ask anyone who works here. It borders on unreasonable, and it is exactly why the work holds up. So many times we have overheard him scolding project managers for doing something wrong and asking them: Tell me, would you do this for your own house? “I assume the answer is no, so go and fix it immediately.”
Then came the builders. Paul did not hire crews. He auditioned them. 🙈 One after another. Then another. Hundreds of crews were tested, tried, and trained over the years. More than sixty earned a permanent place, the creme de la creme of the state’s builders, battle tested and proven in their craft. So when a crew shows up at your home, you are not getting whoever picked up the phone that week. You are getting the ones who survived Paul’s standards.
