The Woman Who Founded Father’s Day: Learn the Real Story Behind Father’s Day

Every year, on the third Sunday in June, families across America gather to celebrate Father’s Day — a day dedicated to honoring the unsung heroes who provide strength, stability, and love within our homes.

But did you know that this heartfelt tradition owes its origins to a determined young woman named Sonora Louise Smart Dodd?

Welcome to our blog, “Learn the Real Story Behind Father’s Day and Make This Year’s Celebration More Meaningful”. Here, we dive into the rich history of Father’s Day and explore ways to make your celebration not just fun, but also deeply meaningful. Here’s what you may not have known about the history of Father’s Day:

Father’s Day in the U.S.

Father’s Day is attributed to the appreciative hearts of two special women on opposite sides of the country.

Meet Sonora Louise Smart Dodd: The Mother of Father’s Day

In 1898, when Sonora was just 16 years old, her mother passed away, leaving her newly widowed father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, to raise her and her five younger brothers alone in their Spokane, Washington home. Inspired by a church service celebrating Mother’s Day, Sonora felt there should be a day to honor fathers too—especially her own.

Undeterred by the initial lack of support (her petition for the first Father’s Day garnered only two signatures), Sonora rallied local church communities. They agreed to participate, with one condition: the celebration would be moved to the third Sunday in June to allow ample time for preparation. And so, in Spokane, the first Father’s Day was born.

A 62-Year Campaign for National Recognition

Sonora’s passion didn’t stop there. Over the next half-century, she crisscrossed the United States, tirelessly advocating for Father’s Day to become a national holiday. Her mission resonated with countless families who recognized the vital role fathers play in providing love, appreciation, and stability.

In 1910, Washington state officially celebrated the first Father’s Day, and eventually, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation recognizing it nationwide. Today, we continue to honor fathers with gifts, barbecues, and heartfelt gatherings—a tradition that began with Sonora’s unwavering dedication.
